Bracketology 2/21/2018

Hard to believe the Big 10 Conference Tournament tips off 1 week from today!

A few tidbits before moving on to the updated seed list:

Texas A&M: Drops two seed lines to a 7 after losing at home to Mississippi State. Despite 7 wins vs Quadrant 1 teams, their dismal conference record of 6-9 has to be taken into account.

Oklahoma: Losers of 6 in a row, and 9 of their past 11 games, this team is a train wreck at the moment. There is still time to right the ship though, but they need to find a way to win a game.

Kentucky: Jumped 2 two seed lines to a 5 seed. Two reasons behind this. 1) They picked up a marquee road victory at Arkansas last night. 2) So many other teams lost ahead of them, that they had to fall. The SEC is chaos right now with teams jockeying for position. Many of the bottom dwellers have pulled out upsets over this past week. We may be in store for one wild SEC tournament in St Louis in 2 weeks!

Michigan: With several teams ahead of them losing, it was time to take a look at the Wolverines again. I decided to bump them up 2 seed lines to my last 6 seed at the moment. That road victory at Michigan State was mighty impressive, and although they don't have as many marquee victories as others do, they also don't have as many losses. They do have a tough road stretch to close out the Big 10 regular season though, travelling to Penn State and Maryland this week.

Baylor: Decided to keep the Bears as my last team in, despite losing to the Mountaineers at home last night. Their overall resume is still slightly better than the teams below them in my opinion.

Here is my updated seed list:

1's: Virginia, Villanova, Xavier, Kansas
2's: Duke, Auburn, Michigan State, Purdue
3's: North Carolina, Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Clemson
4's: Tennessee, Arizona, Gonzaga, West Virginia
5's: Wichita State, Rhode Island, Ohio State, Kentucky
6's: Alabama,
Florida, Arizona State, Michigan
7's: Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Nevada, Houston
8's: Creighton, Missouri, Saint Mary's, Florida State
9's: Miami, Seton Hall, Butler, Virginia Tech
10's: TCU, Arkansas, North Carolina State, Providence
11's: Kansas State, Texas, Saint Bonaventure*, UCLA*, Syracuse*, Baylor*
12's: Middle Tennessee State, Vermont, New Mexico State, Loyola-Chicago
13's: Louisiana, Buffalo, South Dakota State, East Tennessee State
14's: Rider, Charleston, Belmont, UC Santa Barbara
15's: Montana, Bucknell, UNC-Asheville, Northern Kentucky
16's: Florida Gulf Coast, Wagner, North Carolina A&T*, Harvard*, Sam Houston State*, Southern*

Bracketology 2/19/2018

Thought I would elaborate some on the reasoning behind why I have certain teams ranked higher or lower on the seed line compared to the average on Bracket Matrix.

I have Florida ranked higher, despite losing to Georgia and Vandy last week, in large part because of their great road/neutral site wins. The committee seems to be focusing more attention on how a team fairs away from home this year. Florida has a superb list of wins away from home including true road wins at Texas A&M, Missouri, and Kentucky along with neutral site victories over Cincinnati and Gonzaga earlier in the season. This was the deciding factor on why I placed them as a 6 seed, despite the bad losses they have.

This strategy was also why I continue to be lower on Kentucky, slotting them in as a 7 seed, because their only notable wins away from home were at West Virginia and LSU. All of their other quality victories have come at Rupp Arena.

I have Arkansas ranked lower than the average, as a 10 seed, because their only notable wins away from home were at Georgia and at a neutral location vs Oklahoma.

I have NC State ranked slightly higher, placing more emphasis on their 5 quality wins, rather than their 2 bad losses.

Syracuse was lacking a quality victory on the road until they went to Miami and knocked off the Hurricanes this past weekend, boosting them into the last 4 teams in at the moment.

Louisville missed out on a golden opportunity for a marquee win by getting blown out at home to North Carolina.

Georgia is sneaking back into the bubble discussion after wins at Florida and home vs Tennessee this past week.

The same can be said for Utah after sweeping the Washington schools on the road this past week. Winners of 7 of the past 9, they now have 3 homes games to close out the season, including against USC and UCLA, which would really boost their resume if they could win both of those.

Here is my updated seed list:

1's: Virginia, Villanova, Xavier, Kansas
2's: Duke, Auburn, Michigan State, Purdue
3's: North Carolina, Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Tennessee
4's: Clemson, Arizona, Gonzaga, West Virginia
5's: Wichita State, Rhode Island, Ohio State, Texas A&M
6's: Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, Arizona State
7's: Kentucky, Creighton, Missouri, Nevada

Bracketology 2/15/2018

Quick update after a crazy night of hoops on Valentine's Day. There were many bubble teams that helped or hurt their resumes. NC State went on the road to beat fellow bubble team Syracuse, which now gives NC State 5 Quadrant 1 wins. Providence got a huge win at home, as they held on to upset Villanova. Boise State missed out on a golden opportunity for a marquee victory, losing on their home court to Nevada. Kansas State went on the road to Stillwater and held off fringe bubble team Oklahoma State.

Here is my updated seed list:

1's: Virginia, Villanova, Xavier, Purdue
2's: Auburn, Kansas, Duke, Cincinnati
3's: Texas Tech, Michigan State, Clemson, North Carolina
4's: Tennessee, Ohio State, Arizona, Gonzaga
